BENTO GEL TYPE BENTONITE SEALANT

BENTO GEL TYPE BENTONITE SEALANT

SEALANT

The use of bentonite as a sealant has spread significantly in toxic and dengerous waste sites, e.g. deposits of low to medium activity radioactive waste. For some time now, bentonites have been used in soil mixtures around dumping sites, in order to decrease their permeability and in that way prevent the release of gases or leachates generated in the deposit.

More recently, a new trend has begun in hydraulic barrier design, based in the production of a combination of bentonite and geosynthetics (geomembranes and geotextiles). It consists of a compacted clay barrier between a layer of geotextile and another layer of geomembrane (manufactured plastics, as high-density polyethylene or polypropylene, among others).

The distinctive features that make bentonite a good sealer are mainly its high specific surface, great swelling capacity, good plasticity and lubricity, high impermeability and low compressibility. Sodic bentonites are most widely used for this purpose because of their high swelling capacity.

Sodium bentonites are also used as sealants and as liners in the following situations:

  • As a liner to prevent fresh water flow from pools and ponds, golf courses, channels, etc.
  • As a liner to prevent waste water flow from industrial waste sites.
  • In contaminated soils: sheeting and verical barriers.
  • As a sealant in contaminated underground water wells.
  • In radioactive waste sites: underground repositories, crack sealing in granites, etc.
